Phases of PLUMBING in New Construction

Design and Planning

This phase involves working with architects and engineers to create a  plumbing system design that meets building codes and the specific needs  of the structure. It includes determining the placement of fixtures,  pipes, and drainage systems.

Permitting and Approvals

Before any work begins, the plumbing design must be submitted for  approval to the relevant local authorities, and permits must be obtained  to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.

Excavation and Foundation Work

If the building is on a slab foundation, trenches are dug within the  foundation area to accommodate water supply and sewage lines. For  buildings with basements or crawl spaces, this work may occur later in  the construction process.

Rough-In Plumbing

During this phase, the primary plumbing lines are installed. This  includes water supply lines, drainage lines, and vent pipes. Plumbing  fixtures, such as toilets, sinks, and bathtubs, are not installed at  this stage, but rough-in connections are made for future installation.

Pressure Testing

The water supply lines are pressure-tested to ensure there are no leaks.  This step is crucial to identify any issues before walls and ceilings  are closed up.

Inspections

Local building inspectors typically visit the construction site to  inspect the plumbing work at various stages, including the rough-in  phase, to ensure compliance with codes and standards.

Fixture Installation

After passing inspections, plumbing fixtures such as toilets, sinks,  faucets, showers, and bathtubs are installed. This phase also includes  connecting appliances like dishwashers and washing machines.

Final Plumbing Inspection

A final inspection is conducted to verify that all plumbing work is completed correctly and in compliance with regulations.

Testing and Balancing

The plumbing system is tested to ensure that all fixtures work properly  and that water pressure is balanced throughout the building.

Clean-Up and Restoration

Any areas affected by plumbing work, such as walls and ceilings, are repaired and restored to their original condition.

Water Heater Installation

If the building has a dedicated water heater (tank or tankless), it is installed during this phase.

Backflow Prevention Installation

If required by local codes, backflow prevention devices are installed to protect the public water supply from contamination.
